A Parotta’s Story

It was an awesome May and June has just started. As expected, it wasn’t good. In fact, it started with the worst day of this year yet. Let’s not talk about that right now, meanwhile, Me, Ishwarya and Abi had planned to visit the Mylapore Kabaleeshwarar temple this Sunday.

The day had come, we all woke up very late in the morning. We waited for the evening, the day became very cloudy and started to pour in by the evening. I spent my day watching Jurassic Park in the TV and subtly playing with PSP. Dharani was sitting with laptop as usual and Vijayakanth had went to Devi Cineplex to watch Fast and Furious 6 yet another time with Ranjith.

At around 6, we couldn’t sit in the room and so we checked for nearby restaurants to have some good dinner with our fresh salaries. We wanted to have a budget friendly month, and so we are cautious with every rupee before spending. When we went to Citi Centre last month, we noticed a lot of Parotta shops while walking and so we decided to have our dinner there. We had already told our hostel paati about our plan and she had cursed us we won’t get food easily.

Vijayakanth had come at 7 pm and we had started from our room after half an hour. We walked and walked, in search of a Parotta shop and we went to street where we saw the shops that day. But this time, it didn’t look hygienic and so we decided to search for more. We walked back to the Kutchery Road and saw a Parotta shop on the way. We couldn’t see any chairs there so we were thinking for a minute. A guy from the shop asked us whether we are here to eat and we answered yes. He directed us to sit by giving us some plastic stools and asked our order. We ordered a set of Parottas for each of us and we started to wait. We waited and waited for 15 minutes and we still didn’t get any parottas. Losing our patience, we started to run from the shop and went to Mylapore.

We went to another Hotel where we had already had parottas. After washing our hands and taking our seats, we ordered parottas to the waiter boy but he denied that the parottas weren’t available right now. We saw ourselves for a moment and started to move from the hotel.

Having missed to get parottas at the 2nd hotel, we got a bit tensed. We decided to goto Senthilnathan mess at the heart of Mylapore, a hotel where we had already had lots of parottas with Prince accompanying us once. We walked towards it for 20 minutes and we were shocked to see that it was renovation. Highly depressed, and with deep hunger we once again started our journey in search for parottas.

I couldn’t walk anymore and told others that we can take an auto but others didn’t want to. And so we walked, I had an idea of going to another mess which is just near by our hostel and was hoping we could get some food there. It took us another 20 minutes to reach it and to another shock, the mess I had in mind was closed.

Saying, ‘Oh My God!!’, with Paati’s curse coming true, we started walking towards the Marina Park Restaurant at Pattinampakkam. We had been walking for nearly 2 hours, rounding the whole boundary of Mylapore and finally we reached our Parotta destination.

After checking on foursquare, we ordered 2 Malabar parottas for each of us, and even then, the order took an unbelievable 20 more minutes to get prepared and to reach our tables. Finally with a big sigh, we digged in to our plates and finally had our tummies filled in with yummy parottas. The mission was a success. After a heavy dinner, we paid the huge bill with our ‘Kaasu Panam Dhudu Money Money….’. And then me and Vijayakanth got ourselves a banana milkshake, and walked to our hostel.

Clearly, this would be the greatest parotta search in my life next to the one me and Prince had a few months ago. Ready or not, a Parotta hotel searching app is coming soon to the Google Play Store…stay tuned…
